What do we mean by the word 'ethnography' in today's world? If you look in the dictionary you will find many definitions. To my mind, in fact, the word is burdened by meaning that has more to do with culture than with science. Perhaps the very idea of what we are in the 21st Century is as culturally loaded as the word itself. Regardless of how the word is defined, when we go to work in an ethnographic field, it means that the researcher will be part of a community, observing and participating in the behaviors and culture of the community and their activities and its institutions. (By the way, the word 'ethnography' comes from two Greek words, etymologically translated to mean "life-analysis", i.e. the analysis of life. Which is interesting because the work of the chief ethnographer in this journal is described as the analysis of the value of life. You cannot 'go native' and if you do you are going to have a bad time.
What I have learned about myself in this very active field of ethnographic research is that the ethnographer is often "one of the tribe" and that one has to watch one's back. I remember working
